Once the Mets missed signing Neagle and Musina, they were forced to make this deal. Reed, who is 36 years old, went 11-5 with a 4.11 ERA last season. He is a solid number 3 starter, pending the resigning of Hampton. The structure of the deal is as follows: Year 1: $6.75 million Year 2: $7 million Year 3: $6 million Year 4: $8 million option but becomes guarenteed if Reed has 585 innings in 3 years or 400 for 2003 and 2004. The pitching staff will remain solid if the Mets hold on to Hampton and are able to sign a Darin Dreifert or Andy Ashby-like pitcher. (Not Kevin Appier) The signing of Wendell was also helpfull solidifying their bullpen. Wendell had been offered almost $16 million over 3 years by the Orioles but opted to stay in New York. With all incentives, his contract will be worth $9,999,999.
