First, If the Mets are to make a deal to get David Wells, Raul Mondesi may be involved. The deal will include Glendon Rusch, Rick White, Donne Wall, Alex Escobar and possibly a bunch of other low minor leauge prospects. Mondesi, one of the players I believe has some of the most potential in baseball, will be a perfect fit with the Mets. If the Mets put Mondesi in Right Field, the rest of the outfield will include Jay Payton in Center Field and Benny (if he has a repeat preformence) or Hamilton. I would also like to remove my prediction of the Mets going after Johnny Damon. Damon, a free-agent next year, will most likely not go back to Kansas City and the Mets may have a chance to sign him at the end of next season. Anyway, if the Mets are able to acquire Mondesi, Damon will not be needed. I still am not going to make any of this about Wells a prediction, because Steve Phillips does have a reputation of not pulling off competitive deals. (If anyone could name the last deal with any other teams competing for the same player, please e-mail me). The last deal I can think of that was a competitive deal was Al Leiter, which was one they missed out on Kevin Brown. On another note, apparently this Japanese player, Shinjo may be an alright player, and does have an outside chance of starting. He is a several time Japanese league player, but his choice of the Mets because he liked the uniform color does not make me too confident. To go back to Mondesi and Wells, if the Mets are able to pull off this deal, they are definately a better team than Atlanta. Mondesi, assuming he tries this year, is one of the biggest "5 tool" weapons in baseball. Wells, although he has a heavy ERA, is a definate winner and would take him any time. If you are worried about the "Future Star" Alex Escobar, I would not worry about this. Every year there are new top outfield prospects that are going through the Mets organization that pan-out to nothing. (e.g. Alex Ochoa, Butch Huskey, and Ryan Thompson). |
